| Mandatory Experiment: To Measure Velocity with a Ticker Timer |
The unit of time is the second. Time is a scalar quantity.
1 ms = 1 millisecond = 1x10-3 seconds.
1 cs = 1 centisecond = 1x10-2 seconds.
The unit of distance is the metre. Distance is a scalar quantity.
Small distances are measured with a vernier calliper or a micrometer.
1 mm = 1 millimetre = 1x10-3 metres.
1 cm = 1 centimetre = 1x10-2 metres.
1 km = 1 kilometremetre = 1x103 metres

Svetlana Masterkova of Russia ran 1,000 m in 2 min 28.98 sec |
Answer |
| Example |
The highest speed ever achieved on a bicycle was 268.831 km/h (167.043
mph), by Fred Rompelberg (The Netherlands) at Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah,
USA, on October 3, 1995. |
Answer (ii) |
Displacement is a vector quantity.
The symbol for displacement is s.
The unit of displacement is the metre.
| Example |
A car travels 3 km East then 4 km North. |
Answer (ii) The magnitude of the displacement is given by the distance from
start to finish.
|
| Example |
The Earth travels in an approximately circular orbit around the Sun. |
Answer (ii) Since the Earth returns to the same place, the start finish distance
is zero. |
| Example | |
A person walks from a to b and then to c in
a time of 3.4 seconds. |

Set up apparatus as in diagram.
The timer prints 50 dots per second.
Start the timer and give the trolley a push.
The trolley should move along the runway with a constant velocity.

The image above shows a section of ticker tape.

Mark a starting line. Count five dots and mark a finish line.
Measure the distance, s, between the lines. Here s = 3 cm.
Since it takes 1/50 seconds to print each dot, it took a time t = 5/50 = 0.1 seconds to print the five dots.
Thus the velocity of the trolley is given by v = s/t = 3/0.1 = 30 cms-1.
The ticker timer may skip, i.e. some dots may not print out.
Adjust the spring on the ticker timer.
